What We Do

Overview
LAI provides free classes for adults who need to improve their literacy and workplace skills.  The program helps students reach their potential through learning basic and essential reading, writing, critical-thinking, math, computer, job readiness, and academic skills necessary to master the GED tests.  LAI's curriculum is designed to teach students "how to learn" as they develop into: (1) more versatile and qualified employees, (2) educational role models for their children, (3) responsible, participating citizens, and (4) life-long learners.

LAI's total program is comprehensive.  Our curriculum enables students to meet and exceed the literacy standard defined by the U.S. Congress in 1991.  Further, it is responsive to what employers say they need most in a workforce.

What is Literacy?
The current meaning in our nation is "the ability to read, write and speak in English and compute and solve problems on the job and in society, to achieve one's goals and develop one's knowledge and potential."

Program Structure
Prior to enrollment, all prospective students attend a Student Orientation.  Its purpose is to prepare incoming students for returning to "school."  In addition to an overview of the LAI program, students are encouraged, motivated and apprised of the realities of the challenges they will face as they pursue their educational goals.  Also during Orientation, each student is tested for placement using standardized diagnostic testing to determine placement.  Scores on this test determine where each student begins the LAI program.

Students are taught in groups of approximately 15 students.  Classes meet for 12 weeks with new classes beginning each quarter.
