Literacy Action operates as school, educating over 450 adult students per year, at no cost to the students. The ability to provide this service to these many motivated and greatly in need students, is based on a hard working small staff (including teachers paid hourly), generous donations and valuable volunteers. In short, we depend on your contributions to provide the resources needed to help low literacy adults develop their knowledge and potential, achieve his or her goals and to participate fully in our increasingly complex society.
In the early years, we received federal funds but when these grants ended - volunteers, trustees and staff raised private funds to continue. The annual cost per student, or average cost of services per individuals served, is approximately $2,000/student. Each year we campaign to raise sufficient funds to finance quality services. Private donors include: businesses, civic associations, community groups, family funds and charitable trusts, company foundations, independent foundations, grassroots individuals and United Way of Metro Atlanta.
Over the last several years, we have received a small portion of our annual revenue from local governments, from Fulton County Human Services and the city of Atlanta combined, typically for workforce development. This support has ranged from less than two percent to about twelve percent of total revenues.
