Literacy Action, Inc. celebrated its 40th Anniversary in 2008. Literacy Action was founded by volunteers in 1968 and opened its first school for adults in the basement of the Central Presbyterian Church, across from the State Capitol.
LAI evolved from the one-on-one tutorial method and pioneered an adult basic education curriculum that is still being used today. From 1987 to 1997, this classroom-based curriculum helped create a distance learning project in partnership with the Georgia Institute of Technology Center for Rehabilitation Technology that reached more than 16,000 culturally-diverse adults statewide. Since 2000, LAI has served hundreds of individuals each year in its downtown Atlanta facility -- including a growing number of young adults who have not completed high school.
