About Us

Our Mission:

Literacy Action's mission is to provide high quality, sustainable literacy programs that break the cycle of intergernational low-literacy and empower students to reach their highest potential and propel them to self-sufficiency.

Our Vision:

The vision of Literacy Action is to build better futures and break the intergenerational cycle of poverty by teaching low literate adults literacy and life skills that will empower them to reach their full potential as self-sufficient individuals, parents, employees and citizens.

Our History:

Literacy Action was founded by volunteers in 1968 and opened its first school for adults in the basement of the Central Presbyterian Church, across from the State Capitol.

It began using the one-on-one tutorial method and pioneered an adult basic education curriculum that is still used today.

From 1987 to 1997, this classroom-based curriculum helped create a distance learning project in partnership with the Georgia Institute of Technology Center for Rehabilitation Technology that reached more than 16,000 culturally-diverse adults statewide.

Since 2000, LAI has served hundreds of individuals each year in its downtown Atlanta facility -- including a growing number of young adults who have not completed high school.

In 2008 Literacy Action, Inc. celebrated its 40th Anniversary and in 2010 Literacy Action was the Community Foundation's Finalist for Exellence Award.
