DAVID JONES

“My favorite part of volunteering at LAI is interacting and building relationships with students”

David Jones will be celebrating his 12th year volunteering at Literacy Action this year! David, 72, became interested in adult education when he volunteered with his work on a team project through the Atlanta Fulton County Library. Following his retirement, from Bell South, he decided to continue working with adult students. After investigating the three major adult literacy organizations in Atlanta, David chose Literacy Action believing that its mission statement was best suited for him and the goals that he wanted to achieve as a volunteer. Beginning in 1999, David worked with students in LAI’s work skills class and is currently working in the PreGED class helping students perfect their writing skills in preparation for the GED. When asked why David has continued to volunteer at Literacy Action he said, “The agency serves an important constituency in the city I live and it offers its students a way to better themselves in so many ways. Not only does it allow me to keep fresh on my academic skills, volunteering also allows me to see people change their lives.”
