ELECTIVES

Book Club Plus

In this class, students learn about different types of reading materials (such as novels, poems, short stories, and newspapers).  Students spend time each class session reading books from the class library and discussing what they read.  Students learn how to choose reading materials that are interesting to them and written at their reading level.  They also learn to use the library.  The class reads two novels together, and students complete related activities that help them practice their reading, writing, and speaking skills.  These activities focus on history, geography, science, health, finance, work, and family issues.  This class is for students in Reading classes 1-4.

 

Grammar & Writing

This class focuses on writing skills needed for daily writing tasks, as well as writing tasks common in workplace and school settings.  Students learn basic punctuation, grammar, and spelling rules.  They also learn how to write effective letters, memos, and academic essays.  This class is for students who are in Reading 4, Pre-GED, and GED classes.  This class can be repeated.

 

Basic Computer

This class gives students an overview of the computer and its uses in everyday life.  Students learn basic computer operations, such as turning it on, using a mouse, and searching for files. Students also learn to perform basic internet searches, to complete online job applications, and to communicate through social networking sites and email.  Students also learn internet safety tools and basic typing skills.  This class is for students who are in Reading 4, Pre-GED, and GED classes.

               

Advanced Computer

In this class, students continue to practice the skills they learned in Basic Computer, such as using email, searching the internet, and typing.  This class also teaches the basic functions of popular Microsoft Office programs, such as Office, Excel, and Power PointTo be in this class, students must have completed the Basic Computer class.

 

Health Literacy

This class teaches students different reading, writing, and speaking skills needed to understand health information.  Students learn how to read a prescription label, how to set up medical appointments, how to fill out basic medical forms, and how to ask questions and take notes at a doctor’s appointment.  They also learn about preventive care, nutrition, and emergency situations.  Students also complete a research project on a topic they choose.  This class is for students in Reading classes 1-4. 

 

Career Resource & Personal Development

This class teaches skills that are vital for both work and school.  Students learn how to perform job searches that fit their unique skill set, write an effective resume and cover letter, and complete a successful job interview.  They learn time management skills and personal presentation skills.  Students also read, discuss, and apply Stephen Covey’s 7 Habits of Highly Effective People to their daily lives.  This class is for students who are in Reading 4, Pre-GED, and GED classes.
