GALA was founded for the purposes of fostering the sharing of information and advocacy resources for adult literacy in the state.
Literacy Action was one of the original members at the table in November, 2007 to participate in a discussion around how to bring together all adult literacy providers from across Georgia to advocate for adult learners.
LAI wrote a grant for and was awarded a $5,000 grant from Dollar General to assist with the development of the advocacy group and to help cover the costs of GALA’s first information event before the Georgia General Assembly in February 2010.
Paige Pushkin, LAI’s Director of Operations, was the first Chair of GALA. Billie Izard, the Executive Director of the Certified Literate Community Program, is the current Chair of the GALA board.
Literacy Action continues to play an active role in GALA because we believe in its Mission to “increase awareness, support, and funding for adult literacy needs and efforts in Georgia.”
GALA’s Vision is a literate Georgia with accessible learning opportunities for all adults.
