JUNE RICH

“Having an education is a top priority for me.”

June Rich dropped out of school in the 9th grade when she became pregnant and was forced to become the sole support system for herself and her family following the death of her mother. “I learned very young that I had to get a good job, and I learned to be responsible and know what my priorities should be.” June made a promise to herself that she would finish high school before her son.  She worked as a housekeeper and professional home cleaner to support her family. Being an exceptional mother and employee was June’s sole focus.

As her son became older June was able to begin her pursuit of finishing her education, not only obtaining her GED, but eventually a higher degree. In 2006 June took the first step to obtaining her GED by enrolling at Literacy Action. She says “I worked full time at jobs while I went to school at Literacy Action so that I could pass the GED exam. Any difficulties I have had have only inspired me to do more.”  June succeeded in receiving her GED and went on to attend Dekalb Technical College. June has been selected to sit on the Literacy Action Board of Trustees, following in the steps of Patrick Alfred, another former LAI student.

"Since I have been here [Literacy Action], I have gained in reading and math!"
