New LAI Interim President and CEO

ATLANTA, GA, January 9, 2012  −  Literacy Action, Inc. (LAI), today announced that James O. Rodgers has been named interim CEO, effective January 3.

LAI is the largest community-based nonprofit in Georgia that provides free classroom instruction and job-readiness services for adults with low literacy skills.

ATLANTA-- Literacy Action is pleased to welcome four additional members to its Board of Trustees; Candy Berman, Althea Broughton, Daan De Groodt, and Donna Krache. All bring with them exceptional expertise that is beneficial to Literacy Action and adult literacy in Georgia. New Literacy Action Board of Trustee members began their three-year term August 16, joining the 23 existing members of the Literacy Action board.

It is an honor to announce to you that Literacy Action, Inc. was named yesterday as the Finalist for The Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta’s 2010 “Managing for Excellence Award.”

As businesspeople and community volunteers, it’s important to us that Atlanta has a skilled workforce and healthy, thriving families. Unfortunately, there are more than 800,000 adults in Metro Atlanta who are not able to realize their potential because they are under-educated or functionally illiterate.

Community Foundation of Greater Atlanta Profiles Literacy Action

Serving more than 600 students each year, Literacy Action provides free classroom instruction and job readiness services for adults with low literacy skills. In metro Atlanta alone, nearly 800,000 adults are considered “functionally illiterate”. Like many other nonprofits in the Atlanta region, Literacy Action has been facing a significant increase in demand for services over the last two years.
