Recent Accomplishments

 

Literacy Action was named the Finalist in the Community Foundation for Metro Atlanta’s Managing for Excellence Award, a rigorous and competitive process in which we were awarded a $10,000 grant. 

  •  

 

 
  • Received a $150,000 grant from the Joseph B. Whitehead Foundation to support current programs and to provide seed money for Literacy Alliance of Metro Atlanta (LAMA).
  •  Increased registration/enrollment by nearly 30%.
  • Increased class offerings by more than 44%.
  •  Maintained a class rentention rate of over 80%.
  •  Developed a new semester system that has significantly increased retention and numbers of  total students served.
  • Opened a new computer lab and purchased much needed classroom equipment, books, and materials through a generous grant from an anonymous foundation.
  • Moved to a superior testing tool, GAIN (General Assessment of Instructional Needs), that provides LAI students and staff with increased information about entry levels and where additional instruction is needed.
  •  Began a partnership with Atlanta Housing Authority “Good to Great Program”.
  •  Won an award from Cool Blue Interactive that enabled the development of a new Literacy Action website.
  •  Launched a social media program through Facebook, Twitter, and Blogger.
  •  Began efforts to start a young professional group, YELL (Young Empowered Leading Literacy).
  • Received funding from major corporations across the city, including:  Assurant Companies, Bank of America, AT&T, BNY Mellon, Coca-Cola, Cox Enterprises, Georgia-Pacific, Georgia Power, Home Depot, North Highland, Southern Company, Turner Broadcasting, and many others.
