YELL

YOUNG EMPOWERED LEADING LITERACY

An advocacy group, whose mission is to bolster the issue of adult low literacy within the Metro Atlanta community. YELL will recognize how low literacy particularly affects adults under the age of 35 both personally and as a member of our community.

Low literacy has a dramatic impact on the socioeconomic environment that needs to be recognize and brought  to the surface. This group will not only be involved in community activities that correlate with adult literacy, but will also offer various learning opportunities on the issue and interactions with students, staff and board members of Literacy Action.

BACKGROUND

In April 2011, LAI decided to spend one day focusing on our younger volunteers and ask them why they chose to volunteer with the organization and in particular, why choose adult literacy. Five volunteers, ranging between the ages of 21-35, participated in our first ever young volunteer roundtable. Their comments and opinions helped fuel what is now YELL, Young Empowered Leading Literacy.  It is an opportunity to get younger adults involved with adult literacy in their community and provide the knowledge of how low-literacy impacts their world.
