Five New Board Members
New Literacy Action Board Members Join the Crusade to End Adult Low Literacy

 

ATLANTA-- Literacy Action is pleased to welcome Angela Dirr, Melanee Haywood, Susan Morgan, Lee E. Morris, and Peter Stewart to the organization’s Board of Trustees.  Each brings with them expertise that will be beneficial to the organization and adult literacy in Georgia. New Literacy Action Board of Trustee members began their three-year term July 1, joining the 18 existing members of the Literacy Action board.

Literacy Action’s CEO, Karen Webster Parks, states, “It is exciting to welcome such diverse, accomplished, community-oriented candidates to an existing strong board.  These are exciting times for the adult literacy community.  These new board members bring with them a wealth of knowledge and resources.”

Literacy Action Board Chair, Dave Peterson adds, “These are high-caliber community leaders committed to serving adults that need our services and to literacy, in general, as a fundamental need for self-sufficiency as an individual, parent, employee, and citizen.”

Angela Dirr is currently serving as Assistant Vice President and Assistant General Counsel for the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta where she has been an employee for the past 23 years. She earned a Bachelor Degree from Indiana University, a Law Degree from Samford University, and a Master of Law Degree from Emory University.

Melanee Haywood, the Managing Director of Information Technology for Delta Air Lines, Inc., and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Spelman College.

Susan Morgan is an experienced foodservice professional with 25 years of marketing experience in the restaurant industry. Morgan is a graduate of the University of Alabama and Leadership Atlanta Class of 2009. 

Lee E. Morris is the General Counsel and Chief Financial Officer for Stevens & Wilkinson, an Atlanta-based architectural-engineering firm, where he has served for the past 26 years.  Morris is a graduate of Duke University and Emory University School of Law.

Peter Stewart is a Senior Business Development Associate with BNY Mellon Wealth Management. Stewart earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from the University of Vermont and Certificate in Financial Planning from the University of Georgia. 

Literacy Action, Inc. is the largest community-based nonprofit in Georgia that provides free classroom instruction and job-readiness services for adults with low-literacy skills. The organization has been providing adult literacy instruction since 1968. In addition to 6 levels of reading classes, including GED® preparation, the agency also provides 4 levels of math classes and computer, finance, and health literacy classes. Literacy Action, Inc. currently receives no federal or state funding.

Literacy Action is a founding member of the Literacy Alliance of Metro Atlanta (LAMA). LAMA is a coalition that seeks to achieve 100% literacy among metro Atlanta’s adults and families.
