
New Literacy Action Board Members Join the Crusade to End Adult Low Literacy
ATLANTA-- Literacy Action is pleased to welcome four additional members to its Board of Trustees; Candy Berman, Althea Broughton, Daan De Groodt, and Donna Krache. All bring with them exceptional expertise that is beneficial to Literacy Action and adult literacy in Georgia. New Literacy Action Board of Trustee members began their three-year term August 16, joining the 23 existing members of the Literacy Action board.
Literacy Action’s President and CEO, Karen Webster Parks, states, “It is exciting to welcome such community-oriented candidates to the existing board. These new board members bring with them a plethora of knowledge and resources that will have a great impact on the adult literacy community.”
Literacy Action Board Chair, Dave Peterson, adds, “These are highly talented and dedicated community leaders who are committed to providing the necessary services to end the intergenerational cycle of adult low-literacy in metro-Atlanta.”
Candy Berman is the President of Candy Berman & Associates, an event production company for corporate and non-profit organizations. Berman graduated with honors from Simmons College in Boston and received her M.Ed. in Community Counseling from Georgia State University.
Althea Broughton is a Partner at Arnall Golden Gregory’s Real Estate Practice Group. Broughton received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Emory University and a Juris Doctorate degree from University of Virginia School of Law.
Daan De Groodt is a Principal at Deloitte Consulting and a leader in the firm’s Service Delivery Transformation Practice. De Groodt is active in many leadership initiatives at Deloitte and currently leads the firm’s MBA recruiting efforts at Owen Vanderbilt University.
Donna Krache is the Executive Producer for CNN Student News. Krache received a Bachelor’s degree in government from the College of William and Mary and a Master’s Degree in Education from the University of New Orleans.
Literacy Action, Inc. is the largest community-based nonprofit in Georgia that provides free classroom instruction and job-readiness services for adults with low-literacy skills. The organization has been providing adult literacy instruction since 1968. In addition to 6 levels of reading classes, including GED® preparation, the agency also provides 4 levels of math classes and computer, finance, and health literacy classes. Literacy Action, Inc. currently receives no federal or state funding.
Literacy Action is a founding member of the Literacy Alliance of Metro Atlanta (LAMA). LAMA is a coalition that seeks to achieve 100% literacy among metro Atlanta’s adults and families.
